early March
already the lark's song
up in the grey

John, I like the minimalist imagery here - stark becomes March. The bracketing of birdsong between grey and grey is nicely done. Kudos.

Thanks, Denis!

I abandoned work and went for an impromptu (and eventually long) walk up the coast on Wednesday, despite the rain. It's unusual to hear skylark song from the air at this time of year, though not uncommon to hear birds singing on the ground. There were actually two birds here (though one worked better for the haiku). I imagine they were resident males 'defending' their territory, possibly from migratory birds.

It's a shame you don't have skylarks in N. America, other than the odd vagrant (though I believe there's an introduced population around Vancouver). "Like an unbodied joy", as Shelley had it...
